My family just loves Escape Rooms, and these are a fun way to have family time, especially during fall and winter when we have to stay indoors. Today, I am sharing a super fun and scary Free Printable DIY Escape Room called Haunted House. I have made 8 fun printable puzzles, codes, and ciphers for this Escape room. You can easily play this at home or in your classrooms. All you need is plenty of paper and a good color printer.
Age Group: 12+
This Escape room has some easy puzzles, and some are really difficult. This is more suitable for teens and adults, but younger kids can play along.
Play Time: 1 hour
The ideal time to finish all the challenges is 1 hour, but you can increase or decrease that time frame according to the age and expertise level of the players.
None of the Escape rooms created by me so far need cellphones, as the main purpose of my printable games is to help people spend some quality screen-free time.
Supplies Needed
- Printed puzzle sheets
- A glue stick or tube
- A pair of scissors
Some puzzles need to be printed on thick cardstock, while some need regular printer paper.
How to Play
You need to print all the puzzle sheets and cut the ones that require it.
- Print and glue all the envelopes.
- I have included printable envelopes for each puzzle, and each envelope has a code on it. You can either hide the envelopes in different places or just hand them over to the players after a successful completion of each puzzle.
- Give players 3 tip tickets to players before the game that they can redeem as per their need. You can give more tip tickets if players are younger.
- Players have to complete all the challenges before reaching the end, and the player or team who reaches the end first wins.
- If only one player or one team is playing, print just one set of all challenges, but in case of more than 1 player or team competing against each other, print duplicate sets of challenges.

Free Printable Hint Tickets for Escape Room
These are the free printable hint tickets for this Haunted House Escape Room. Print the tickets on heavy cardstock paper and cut each ticket around the edges.
You can give the players 3 or more tickets at the beginning of the game. The players can redeem the tickets if they get stuck and need a hint related to solving the puzzle or the solution. You can use the hints sheet to share the hints for each puzzle. You can also share more if you like.
Free Printable DIY Haunted House Escape Room Puzzle 1
These are the printable sheets for the first puzzle. Just click on each sheet one by one to save the larger printable image, or click here to download both files in PDF format. Drop the sheet with smoky words near the players and hide the one with the letters and numbers close by. You can also tear the second sheet into some big pieces to make the puzzle-solving more difficult.
Free Printable Haunted House Escape Room Puzzle 2
This is the envelope and puzzle number 2 for this escape room. The players will also need the book image for puzzle number 3. You can print the image of the book on regular printer paper, and the envelope can also be printed on regular paper, but print the triangles on heavy cardstock. After printing the triangles, cut them around the edges and scatter them in the room. Fold and enclose the book image in the envelope. You can download both puzzle images in PDF format here.
How to Assemble the Envelope
Print the envelopes for each puzzle and cut each around the edges. Fold the sides from the dashed lines. Apply glue to the side flaps and paste the larger flap on them. The envelope is ready. Now, add the printed puzzles to the relevant envelopes and have fun.

These are the printable files and envelope for this Haunted House puzzle number 3. You can print the circle and the envelope on a regular printer sheet, but print the wands on heavy cardstock paper and cut each wand on the dashed line. You can download the PDF puzzle files here. Assemble the envelope and enclose the circle and wands in it. You can also scatter the wands around to make the puzzle more difficult.

Haunted House Escape Room Puzzle 6 Free Printable
This is the envelope and files for puzzle number 6. The message is written in the crosscode cipher. You need to print the blue cube file on a piece of heavy cardstock and assemble it according to the pictures I am sharing below. Enclose the sheet with the griffin inside the envelope. The paper over paper is one of my most favorite puzzles. I enjoy creating one each time. You need to print this on a regular printer sheet that is ideally 70 gsm or a maximum of 80. The paper needs to be translucent when positioned towards a source of light. You can download the PDF files here.
